Kolkata, August 12, 2026: Kolkata Police has issued a warning to parents and children about the growing risk of cyber fraud through online gaming platforms, saying criminals are increasingly using games to target young users and steal money and personal information.
According to police, scammers may approach gamers through online games and attempt to obtain one-time passwords (OTPs), banking information, login credentials and other personal details. Victims may also be encouraged to click on fraudulent links, download unsafe APK files or make payments for gaming points, coins and avatar upgrades.
Police said such scams can result not only in financial losses but also in the theft of credit card details, social media accounts and other sensitive information. The risk can be greater when children use their parents’ phones or computers, potentially giving criminals access to banking and personal data.

Victim Loses More Than ₹2 Lakh

In a recent case highlighted by Kolkata Police, a victim reportedly lost more than ₹2 lakh through a gaming application. The victim’s prompt complaint allowed police to intervene quickly, block the transfer and recover the money.
Police have advised gamers to remain cautious while interacting with unknown players and online gaming services.

Kolkata Police Issues Safety Advisory

Authorities have advised users to:

• Never share OTPs or passwords with anyone.
• Avoid suspicious payment requests and money-based games.
• Avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links.
• Do not download APK files from pop-ups or unverified sources.
• Use only trusted and official app stores for downloading applications.
• Avoid sharing personal information with strangers online.
• Use usernames that do not reveal real names or other identifying information.
• Report suspected cyber fraud to the police immediately.

Police also highlighted the importance of parents monitoring children’s online activities and maintaining open communication with them. Officials have encouraged parents to act as trusted companions so children feel comfortable reporting online harassment, bullying or suspicious interactions.

Online Gaming Increasingly Exploited by Cybercriminals

Kolkata Police noted that the rapid growth of online gaming has created additional opportunities for cybercriminals. Tracking offenders can be challenging because some operate through anonymous chats, encrypted communication and foreign-based servers.
The Kolkata Police Cyber Cell has also shared guidance for parents on protecting children from online harassment, fraud and bullying. Recommendations include monitoring children’s internet activity, encouraging them to use the internet in relatively open areas and ensuring that personal information remains protected.
The police advisory reinforces the need for children and parents to treat online gaming interactions with the same caution as other online activities.
