NEW YORK (AP) — A stray bullet killed a 7-month-old baby in a stroller Wednesday afternoon. A man on a moped opened fire at a group of people on a Brooklyn sidewalk, authorities said.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related. They say the child was an unintended victim of the stray bullet.

“There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters near the shooting scene. “A life that had barely begun ended in an instant.”

The shooting happened around 1:20 p.m. Two men sped down a street on a moped. The man riding on the back fired at least two shots at a street corner where several adults and children had gathered. Police reported no other injuries.

The moped sped off but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The impact threw both men off the vehicle so hard that the passenger lost both his shoes, she said.
